Give yourself enough time to prepare

Planning outfits for a family photoshoot can be a fun and exciting process, but it can also be a bit overwhelming. Plan a few weeks ahead to give yourself enough time to shop and to get items shipped if you need to.

Here are some tips to help you plan outfits for your family photoshoot:

  • Consider your location: Your color scheme should compliment the environment that you're going to shoot in. Neutral color schemes always photograph well, then you can add muted colours to suit the surrounding to give your photo's extra depth.

Neutrals include - tans, browns, creams, white. Please choose shades of these and mix them.

Use black sparingly - rather choose a navy blue, or dark grey or dark brown over black. Black photographs very flat in most circumstances.

Muted colours that I love to photograph are: rust, sage green, pale/faded blue, mustards.

Red photographs really well on sand. It's a wonderful pop of colour if you're looking for a bold option.

Once you have colours in mind, look for textures and patterns that will add extra interest to the final look. Lace, small florals, vertical stripes

all look great, but don't overdo it. One to two patterns is enough for a small family group.

You can add hats/suspenders or cool boots if the location allows for it. Any shoots on the sand are done barefoot.

I personally love creating some contrast of colours against the background. For example - rust against greenery.

Once you've got your colour scheme in mind:

Start with Mama.

Now that you have your colours in mind, start shopping for your dress. Finding your dress can be the hardest as you want to look and feel sensational in your photo's. Long, flowy dresses that are fitted around your ribs or waist are flattering and streamline your body. Keep in mind what features you want to show off, what you’re self-conscious of and want to minimize. Choose long sleeves if you don't want to stress about how your arms look in a photo. A dress with a slit in the leg is great for posing and helping with movement. Don't opt for a dress that opens widely in the middle or it's hard to walk when windy. You can also opt for a high waisted skirt and a crop top. Be aware of your bra straps - I cannot edit them out if they are showing.

  • Next, if you have a daughter, plan her outfit to co-ordinate with yours. I’d recommend choosing 2-3 complimentary colors from your color palette, and then have variations of those colors, in darker or lighter shades incorporating texture and pattern with depth. Do the same for your hubby and sons. Men look great in fitted chino's, button up shirts, chino shorts or a smart T-shirt of good fabric. Avoid all graphic tees and normal T-shirt material where the shirts don't fit well.

  • Try on all outfits before the photoshoot, to make sure they fit properly and look good together.

  • Family photo's is a special occasion so celebrate it. Buy new outfits if you need to, they can be worn again afterwards. Moms, use it as a time to get your hair/make-up/nails done so that you feel fabulous. I suggest keeping your make-up very natural.

AND LASTLY, now that you all look fabulous, be open to letting the experience unfold naturally to create some genuine and timeless memories of your family!
